Meet Lucas:

A Child of the Digital Age

THE PROBLEM.

Lucas is like so many kids today. He spends hours in front of a screen but rarely sets foot outside. He’s never felt the tug of a fishing line, heard the crunch of leaves under his shoes, or discovered a trail that leads to nowhere and everywhere.

Lucas doesn’t know what he’s missing because he’s never had the chance.

And he’s not the only one.

Across Palm Avenue and beyond, children spend less than seven minutes a day in unstructured outdoor play. That’s a staggering contrast to the seven hours they spend on screens.

This shift isn’t just sad, it’s serious. Research shows that time in nature supports children’s emotional balance, attention span, creativity, and physical health. It even strengthens their sense of belonging to a community and the planet.

HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS…

THE SOLUTION.

Once, Okihi was our local treasure—a wild, riverside haven where kids explored, families connected, and nature thrived. Then came the fire. Trails vanished. Wildlife disappeared. And the land was silenced.

But not forever. Project Okihi is bringing the land back to life.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we’re restoring Okihi to give children like Lucas a chance to unplug and reconnect—with the earth, with learning, and with their neighbors.

RESTORATION

Reviving native plants, healing riverbanks, and creating homes for wildlife again.

EDUCATION

Bringing thousands of Kern County students and youth groups into outdoor classrooms where science, wonder, and imagination come alive.

RECREATION

Creating safe, beautiful spaces for families, hikers, and community members to gather, explore, and grow.

Let’s Power the Future of Okihi—Together

With just $45 from each household in our community, we can raise $10,000 to complete Phase 2 Electrical lighting the way for safe, educational outdoor programs all year long.

Give today and help bring nature back to our kids’ lives.
